  • Choosing Which Varieties to Grow

    February 20, 2024
    gardening, seed starting

When you have so many seeds or maybe you’re just interested in so many different varieties, but you don’t have the space to grow all of them, choices need to be made! But how can you possibly narrow all of it down? Here are a few of the considerations that I make when I am trying to decide which varieties will make it into my garden lineup:

In summary, choose varieties that will produce a lot for your efforts, with flavor profiles that you will enjoy! You can still choose a few new varieties each year, because you never know when you’ll find your new favorite, and then you might be able to eliminate some varieties that you don’t like as much.

    Happy gardening!

  • An Affordable Gift Guide For Gardeners

    November 19, 2023
gifts, gifts for gardeners, holiday gift guide

The holidays are just around the corner and you might be stuck on what to get your favorite gardener. Or, perhaps you’re looking to treat yourself for the holidays! No matter the reason, I have compiled a short list as a gift guide, with some discount codes to help keep the dent in your wallet smaller. I may receive a small commission for any discount codes or links clicked.

    The Roo Apron

Roo Gardening has wonderful gardening/harvest aprons. Much like a kangaroo, the aprons have pouches for hands free harvesting. And if you want to empty it all out easier, just release the straps and dump out your harvest. It can also be used for weed picking, or carrying around tools, all hands free. It comes in a full length “Roo” apron, or, a waist apron called the “Joey” apron (pictured above) and a new apron for chicken owners – the “Rooster,” with egg collection slots! They come in a variety of colors and also have other accessories and products. You can save 10% with code COOKSEYFARMS and the coupon code is typically stackable with any other discounts going on at the same time. Price point: ~$28-45

    Allbirds

Allbirds have super comfortable shoes. While they aren’t a gardening specific brand, I can appreciate them for a myriad of reasons: they’re durable and built to last. Some shoe models are even machine washable which is great if you get them super dirty. Many of their shoe models also have parts of their shoes made out of plant based materials! If you’re looking for a sustainable shoe brand, this is it. If you use my link, you can get free socks with your order, just make sure to add the socks to your cart after clicking my link. The shoes pictured above are the Tree Dashers. Price Point: ~$100+ but can vary depending on what promotions are available!

    Sili-Seedlings

Sili-Seedlings Are reusable silicone seed starting trays. They are dishwasher safe so you can sanitize them between uses and because of the silicone material, it’s easy to pop out the seedlings when they are ready for transplant Price point: $6-9 each.

    Pink Buffalo Mushroom Kit

Pink Buffalo Mushroom Kits are a fun and unique gift! With all of the ‘shroom buzz lately, being able to grow your own mushrooms at home is fun and educational! Price point: $30 per kit. Use code COOKSEYFARMS for 20% off!

I know social media isn’t for everyone, which is why I wanted to reach more people by going back to basics with blogging. However, I do want to mention that you can also see more of my content through my other channels. I am currently most active on Instagram, and am trying to get my TikTok and YouTube Channels set up. I hope to be able to create longer form videos on YouTube to help teach gardeners, experienced and beginners alike, but feel free to visit me on any of these social media channels:

Hi there! Welcome to my site/blog. My name is Alison and I am a home gardener. I know the name “Cooksey Farms” would lead you to believe I have a huge property with chickens and other animals, but I really just have a cat. And I live in the suburbs in California. And my garden space isn’t huge. “So why use the term ‘farm?’” you may be wondering. Well, that is in part a longer story that started out as a joke that I used for my Instagram handle. But as my account grew, I realized it may be misleading, but by that point, I was already in too deep and established with my username, so I kept it. But, “hobby farms” are very real, and generally, the way I see it, hobby farms are for gardeners who maybe want to do a little more than flowers and landscaping, or maybe focus more on growing food.

I try to live as sustainably as I can; I have been gardening for about four years although I grew up watching my dad garden. In these four years, I have learned a lot, and most of it has been by trial and error. I do research and ask others for advice, but sometimes, the best thing to do is try something. If it works? Great! If it didn’t work? You know you switch it up and try something else.

I am so excited to be starting this website, and I am happy that you’re here. Be sure to check back for more updates!

    Alison
